How DANCE PRESCRIPTION Works:
DANCE PRESCRIPTION exists to revolutionise jazz technique by helping dancers achieve extraordinary results through smart training, clear goals and a supportive environment.
Our approach combines elite dance training with principles from sports science and medicine, placing a strong emphasis on injury prevention, efficient practice and sustainable progress.
At DANCE PRESCRIPTION, dancers learn how to train intelligently — whether their goal is executing six perfect pirouettes or succeeding in other areas of life such as school, sport or academics.
DANCE PRESCRIPTION operates through three core offerings:
• The Program - our elite audition-only training program
• Workshops - travelling technique intensives open to all dancers
• Online Courses - structured training accessible anywhere in the world
The DANCE PRESCRIPTION Program
The DANCE PRESCRIPTION Program is a 12-month audition-entry jazz technique extension program for talented and dedicated dancers.
Designed to complement - not replace - a dancer’s regular studio training, the program works much like academic tutoring in subjects such as mathematics or English: accelerating progress through targeted instruction, goal setting and structured home practice.
The program focuses on developing:
• exceptional jazz technique
• strength and conditioning
• artistic performance quality
• discipline and self-confidence
• intelligent training habits
Dancers train alongside like-minded peers who are equally motivated to improve, creating a high-energy team environment that pushes everyone to reach their full potential.
Programs are currently based in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with additional virtual training options available for dancers outside these locations.
All dancers must audition to join the program. Auditions are held twice annually.
Training Structure
Successful dancers participate in fortnightly group training sessions, alongside structured home practice tasks and challenges.
Training includes:
• Ballet Conditioning
• Jazz Technique Development
• Learning Dissection Sessions (goal setting, training education and performance development)
Private consultations in both jazz and ballet technique are also available.
Training takes place on fortnightly Sundays in each city (timetables vary per location).
Virtual teams train either fortnightly Sundays at 3pm or weekly Mondays at 6:30am
Teams
Dancers train in three development groups:
Medical School Team (Ages 6-10)
Preclinical Team (Ages 10-13)
Clinical Team (Ages 12+)
Age overlaps are intentional, allowing dancers to be placed in the team that best suits their development stage and training needs.
Typical training duration:
Medical School & Preclinical:
1 hour conditioning + 2 hours techniqueClinical Team:
1 hour conditioning + 2.5 hours technique
Auditions
Entry into the DANCE PRESCRIPTION Program is by audition only.
Auditions are typically held in December for the following year, with limited mid-year audition opportunities available.
During the audition process, Dr Lisa Ellis evaluates:
foundational ballet technique
flexibility and strength
work ethic and attitude
growth potential
Selecting dancers at the right stage of development allows DANCE PRESCRIPTION to maximise improvement while maintaining an exceptionally low injury rate.
Lab Assistants & Assistant Training Program
Outstanding dancers may be invited to participate in the Assistant Training Program (ATP).
Lab Assistants are hand-selected by Dr Lisa Ellis and represent DANCE PRESCRIPTION at workshops and events, often travelling nationally and internationally as demonstrators.
ATP training usually takes place on Saturday evenings before Sunday program training and is invitation only.
Participants are selected based on their dedication to the program, technical improvement and leadership and professionalism.
ATP dancers also receive priority access to private consultations.
The Home Training Philosophy
While DANCE PRESCRIPTION training sessions are exciting and motivating, the program’s real success comes from what happens between classes.
Think of DANCE PRESCRIPTION as a recipe for success.
Attending classes provides the ingredients - knowledge, corrections and training strategies, even home practice programs - but real progress happens when dancers apply these skills consistently and actually do their home practice.
Dancers who commit to the full process consistently see dramatic improvements in technique and performance.
Beyond Dance
DANCE PRESCRIPTION doesn’t just build better dancers - it develops strong, resilient and disciplined young people.
The program teaches dancers how to:
set meaningful goals
create actionable plans
build consistent habits
develop resilience and self-belief
These skills extend far beyond the studio and support success in dance, school and future careers.
