DANCE PRESCRIPTION’s mission is to revolutionise the world’s jazz technique by inspiring young dancers to achieve their goals with tangible plans that work in a friendly and fun environment. We place an emphasis on injury prevention and aim to equip young dancers with the tools required to achieve whatever their heart desires - whether iat is being able to execute 6 perfect pirouettes or nailing quadratic equations! DANCE PRESCRIPTION has two endeavours, the Program and the Workshops. In a nutshell, the DANCE PRESCRIPTION Program is a fortnightly training program for elite dancers based in Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast, Australia, and is audition entry only. The Workshops are travelling classes open to all dancers aimed to give a burst of the best DANCE PRESCRIPTION exercises to boost dancers of all levels. DANCE PRESCRIPTION Workshops travel all over the world.
The DANCE PRESCRIPTION Program is an audition-entry 12 month jazz technique extension program for talented and dedicated dancers. Based in Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast in Australia, it is specifically designed to enhance dancers’ technique, artistry and skills with a focus on goal setting and efficient and effective home practice.
Like-minded individuals train together, challenging each other to reach their full potential in a team environment. The program focuses on building strength and improving technique while simultaneously boosting self-confidence, all with the goal of creating dazzling dancers with bright futures.
Similar to a tutor in academic subjects like Mathematics or English, this Accelerated Extension Program is intended to complement the dancer’s regular dance studio training, not replace it. DANCE PRESCRIPTION creates strong, intelligent, creative and exciting dancers who push the boundary of possibilities in the dance industry of tomorrow. For best results, dancers should also be engaged in their home studio and have solid ballet, jazz and choreographic training. Home studio compulsory rehearsals are the only activity to take priority over DANCE PRESCRIPTION training if there is a timetable clash.
To join the DANCE PRESCRIPTION program, dancers must first undergo an annual audition process which is usually held in December for the following year. This audition process allows Dr Lisa to evaluate the dancers current strengths, basic technique and growth potential to ensure they are the right fit for the team. It is important the dancers have solid basic ballet training, flexibility and strength before they are chosen to maximise growth and minimise the risk of injury. DANCE PRESCRIPTION takes pride in selecting and educating young athletes at the right stage of their dance development and is proud of the incredibly low record for injuries.
Successful dancers who gain a place in the DANCE PRESCRIPTION program will participate in fortnightly group training, as well as additional homework tasks and challenges. Private Consultations in both jazz and ballet are also available, but not compulsory.
The DANCE PRESCRIPTION team trains in two seperate age-based groups: the Preclinical team (6-12yrs) and the Clinical team (12 and up). Dancers in these teams attend group Dance Conditioning and Jazz Technique classes, followed by Learning Dissection sessions every second Sunday. Learning Dissection classes are where the magic of DANCE PRESCRIPTION comes alive as dancers are taught and kept accountable for goal setting and learn about the importance of sleep and nutrition as well as complete challenges for spectacular prizes. Individual and group private consultations are scheduled on a rotating basis around these classes.
Additionally there are DANCE PRESCRIPTION Lab Assistants who are hand picked by Dr. Lisa Ellis from the DANCE PRESCRIPTION team. After extensive training, these assistants accompany Dr. Lisa on scholarship for her national and international tours acting as demonstrators in her workshops and representing both their home studio and Australia. The Assistant Training Program (ATP) typically takes place on the Saturday night before a DANCE PRESCRIPTION Sunday training and is by invitation only. Invited dancers are those who have shown exceptional dedication, progress and commitment to the program, in and out of the classroom. Participants in ATP are given priority for regular private consultations.
DANCE PRESCRIPTION is fun and exciting when trainings are on, but it’s important to note that its success is due to the home training component. Dancers who see the best results continually devote time to home practice. Think of DANCE PRESCRIPTION as a recipe for success. Attending classes is like gathering all the finest ingredients - you get the essential, knowledge, tools and technique - but it’s at home, where you apply these skills and practice consistently, that you cook up progress and make the recipe come to life.
Not only does DANCE PRESCRIPTION offer significant benefits for dancers’ careers, but it also equips them with valuable life skills that extend beyond the studio. A key element of the program is its emphasis on goal setting and creating a plan to achieve them. While each team member is always working towards a dance driven goal, the techniques and strategies they develop are highly transferable to other aspects of life. This approach helps dancers practice discipline, perseverance and encourages a proactive mindset to set them up for success in their dance and personal journey.
In order to ensure all dancers in the DANCE PRESCRIPTION program gain maximal attention and individualised training, places in the DANCE PRESCRIPTION program are limited. Dr. Lisa is constantly frustrated that she can’t reach more dancers to help teach them the tips and tricks that have helped her DANCE PRESCRIPTION dancers to improve so quickly. To solve this, DANCE PRESCRIPTION created its travelling workshops to reach more dancers and offer their training to as many people as possible.
DANCE PRESCRIPTION Workshops are 90 minute workshops specialising in specific technical elements. Workshops available include The Secret to Turns, Explosive Jumps, Let’s Get Flexible, Improvisation Nation, Legs and Extensions and Mixed Jazz Tech (for a little of everything). Open workshops (“open” because they’re open to all dancers/gymnasts/calisthenic artists etc) are scheduled throughout the year all over Australia - we regularly travel to Sydney, The Gold Coast, Brisbane, The Sunshine Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart and of course Melbourne. These workshops are open to any dancers aged 6 to 24, and cater for all levels of experience and expertise. They are an opportunity for like-minded dancers to train together and Dr. Lisa loves giving out her best secrets to see how many dancers can have an ‘aha’ moment in such a short amount of time. Dance studios can also request DANCE PRESCRIPTION workshops at their studio. In this format, they can choose between Dr. Lisa or one of her expert program directors Coach Lara and Coach Chloe to come in-house and teach a workshop to dancers of the studio’s choice. These workshops can be open to the public or closed to just their dancers and are an excellent way to inspire your studios dancers and fast track their technique. Over the years, we have held in-house workshops in every corner of Australia and all over the world. We also perform annual workshop international tours, with the most recent tour covering England, Scotland and Wales.
